In all great portraits there is a sense of the dynamic between the artist and sitter, of their intimacy or self-consciousness. In attempting to discover something of their subject and in order to communicate it to the viewer, the artist often ends up giving something of themselves away and the person in the portrait becomes someone new, part-artist and part-sitter. By trying to capture the life of someone and put it on canvas, portraiture is striving for the impossible: to stop life and not die.
